May 31, 2024 - I made a lot of mistakes

At the eve of a big marathon, athletes tend to stick to very strict routines, partly to reduce variables that may go wrong, partly for sheer superstition.

Today is the eve of the Lather Games marathon. But I don't have an athlete's discipline. I am just a naive enthusiast who decided he couldn't wait to test the vintage boar brush he had just unearthed in his father's den.

Gentle bristle exfoliation my a$$! You could probably peel a potato with these bristles! Now I understand why my father switched from brush and soap wetshaving to canned foam: while on many levels he still seems to have been raised by Spartans who forced him to withstand all kinds of discomfort, I do understand why he jumped on the foam train as soon as he could, so to pursue a less punishing shaving experience!

Also, the revived brush shed five hairs during the FL, forcing me to double-check every time if there was any left before I made my razor passes - I mean, those adamantium hairs would've probably cut the Henson's aluminum as if it was made of warm butter.

About today's software and scents:

• as I feared, BDLM3 is not for me, at least not right now: while I found the scent off the puck to be very intriguing, during the shave I progressively became annoyed with the mint/rum accord.

• I then rushed to find an AS that could start from a shared "green" ground, and then lead me on a more comfortable post-shave olfactory journey. My first choice, Heather, felt trying to use a watercolor to cover a drawing you weren't happy with: nice, but too transparent. I waited a few minutes, then got impatient and frantically browsed again thru my AS, looking for a bolder option.
  My hand passed next to B+M War, and a fleeting self-punishing thought went through my sorry brain. Then my survival instinct kicked in and I grabbed Dr Jon's 8th Dimension, which I hadn't been using for almost a year: it didn't really have much in common with the previous layers, but provided some of the "reset" effect I needed.
  I no longer smell like an idiot who just splashed mojito on his face.
  Now I smell like an overconfident 1980s smartass who does not care to smell like he had too much mojito. The AS menthol provided additional confidence, as my skin is now desensitized, and so is any self-conscious doubt.

Even if I still don't feel it, I saw in the mirror that I have a big red bump on my neck, close to my Adam's apple. I treated it with a bit of Pro Victis, the aptly named recovery cream from SV. Right after the shave I felt beaten, but the post-shave sequence restored some hope that I may not be vanquished (yet).

Finishing out the week with a good shave. Oddly, this is the only Omnibus base soap I have. I have owned more Reserve and Glissant and White/Black Label over the years. I think I'm at the point where I get a good shave with pretty much any base. I started out using WMS and I still think that starting at zero and learning with that soap served me very well especially with my extremely hard water.

First shave with the Konsul, very interesting and unique. I'm glad I was able to try this. The razor is super-heavy, so I noticed I didn't need as many buffing strokes as I usually do with my many years experience using lighter weight titanium razors and handles. I started out at a 3 setting to get an idea of how this performed. I was surprised at how quickly it mowed down all the tough stubble. Very little in the way of cleanup was required. I did the ATG at the same setting, then jumped to a 4 on the dial or the slightest bit of touchup.

I stand impressed at how well this is thought out and engineered. Matt really did his homework on this one. What a beautiful shave contraption!

Woke up this morning and did a quick single-pass shave on both my dome and my face because I'm not going to see my razor again until some time on Sunday. We're departing this evening on a 2-week vacation (the first 2-week vacation of my 20+ years of being a working adult). We're taking an 11-day cruise around the north Atlantic - Belgium, Amsterdam, Norway, Iceland. We're taking the overnight flight from Orlando to London tonight, spending Saturday night in London, and boarding the ship on Sunday. Since I had to bury my razor blades in a checked bag, that means I won't be unpacking them until sometime on Sunday afternoon. So I had to make today's shave count.

I have pre-loaded the first couple weeks of LG SOTD posts so I'm really hopeful that everything goes smoothly in my absence. But if there are any issues, I won't be able to do anything about it until the 15th, so you'll want to ping the other mods.

Happy Friday! Tried Bon Monsieur from ZM (& Rogue) today and let’s just say she is getting every ounce of use of the mousse illuminee she developed with Maher a couple years back. Every new ZM scent I’ve tried recently is all built around this distinctive note. You’ve got your straight Mousse Illuminee, have MI with some fresh green notes in The Magician, sharper, aromatic green notes in The Highlander, and some earthier notes in Bon Monsieur. I personally only really find a meaningful difference between The Highlander and the other three. The other three, including this one, could have easily been a single release they are so similar. I’ll try again but, while the Mousee Illuminee note is pleasant, it’s not my idea of a shave smell.

And not to in any way dunk on Sean Maher, because he has made some of my favorite scents for shaving, but I’m not seeing the collab here - the only part that says Rogue Perfumery to me is the mousse illuminee note, and that was developed in a collaboration a couple years back. Heather has since mixed it into a couple of “new” scents using the note and I can’t tell a difference in theme or quality from her solo efforts and this “new” collaboration. I would think producing the fourth mousse illuminee scent and bringing back the collaboration label would prompt something different, but I am clearly wrong 😬

Woke up at 5:30am and couldn't fall back to sleep. Was/am so exhausted that I thought about just putting the blade into the Overlander for an autopilot shave (though blade handling while tired is risky) but decided against it. Cranked the Aristocrat Adjustable up to 6 this morning and immediately knew that it was a where it needed to be! I finally seemed to be getting some blade feel or something that told me what was happening. First two passes on 6, then started the third pass on 6 for my cheeks and turned it down to 4 for the slightly XTG pass on my neck (the one that usually gives me the irritation). A BBS shave this morning; and I was starting to doubt the razor.  

It was a remarkable difference between settings 5 and 6. I remember reading that on some adjustables the blade exposure stays the same throughout the settings while on others it changes along with the blade gap; I'm guessing the Slim/Aristocrat Adjustable falls into the latter category.  

The tub of Campione has a nice amber window to see the counter below it; bigger than a toonie (Canadian $2 coin) and eyeballing it it looks larger than the soap is on either side of the donut. Thankfully I've got a couple of spares for when this one finally bites the bullet.

That does it for Black Rose. It's nice to see the sample pile dwindling, but I'm itching to use some of my more recent acquisitions again. This was an incredibly smooth shave though. This 4th use Rubie performed really well in the Merica. I'm impressed because no other blade has really stacked up against the Wizamet so far in this razor. What to use the last day before LG is hard. You’re locked into your calendar for a month, and so many good smells will go unused. In the end, I opted for my new tub of Roman spice. I’ve been using the toner and frag but not the soap. I haven’t actually used highland base yet aside for a smush of Blackwatch. It’s stupid soft. a 12 second load and I had too much soap. I’ll drop to 8 next time. But it’s also super slick, shave went off without a hitch. Smooth. I’ve been struggling with some irritation on my chin the last week. I’m not enthused about that going into the games. But sacrifices to skin must be made.

I’ve already used Varen this week, but it’s been storming since the early hours here and rainy days cry Varen to me. And clearly it was a good choice because this was probably my best shave this week. I have to drive to Dallas in a few hours for my son’s lacrosse tournament, so fingers crossed that the weather clears before we have to hit the road.

And late breaking update, the tournament was just cancelled due to overly wet fields… #sadtrombone

Last shave before my first ever Lather Games. Looking forward to the shenanigans. As of right now CB Reflection did not make it on my calendar, so wanted to get 1 more shave in with it. Just like all CB, it did not disappoint.

Last shave before the crazy days start. I’ve gotten my soaps down now except wildcard Wednesday, but it will depend on how some challenges go for what I use. I’m definitely calling this brush broken in now. Pre shave gave it a good look over to see how much splitting, and I think it has more split ends than unsplit now. Very soft brush now that is probably comparable to a Cashmere synthetic. The Weck behaved well again, and it will make another appearance next month. I grabbed my set of YRP because it will not be making an appearance at least as a soap next month. This is one of my favorite patchouli forward scents because the yuzu and rose keep it from taking over. Because I was surprised how Shag soap smelled so strongly of patchouli, but faded quite a bit for me when hydrated, u/tsrblke sent me a sample of the splash to really drive it home. We’ll see how that turns out for me.
